iPhone 17 Pro vs. iPhone 18 Pro: Worth Buying Refurbished?
iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro comes down to one question: does a faster chip and a new camera trick justify $100 more, or is the refurbished 17 Pro the smarter buy now that Apple has moved on? The 18 Pro's real upgrades are the A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture main camera and faster charging. The screen size, the ultrawide and telephoto cameras, and the body dimensions carry over unchanged. Add in the discount that always follows an outgoing Pro model, and the refurbished iPhone 17 Pro is the better deal for most people today.

The iPhone 18 Pro (from $1,199) adds the A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture main camera and faster wired charging over the iPhone 17 Pro (was $1,099), but keeps the same screen size, ultrawide, telephoto and body. Apple discontinued the 17 Pro on September 9, 2026, the day it announced the 18 Pro. On October 29, 2026, refurbished unlocked 17 Pro units started at $941 at Back Market. No refurbished 18 Pro was listed in the US that day, and RefurbMe's data points to mid-November for the first one, so buy the 17 Pro now if you need a phone today.
According to RefurbMe's tracking, a refurbished iPhone typically reaches the US market a median of 67 days after Apple announces it, a figure RefurbMe calls Time-to-Refurb (as of October 2026, per RefurbMe's iPhone data). The iPhone 17 Pro was slower than that: RefurbMe recorded its first refurbished listing at Gazelle on November 22, 2025, 74 days after Apple announced it on September 9, 2025. A year on, refurbished 17 Pro stock is plentiful, while the 18 Pro has no US refurbished listing yet.

Line up the two phones and the pattern is clear: the iPhone 18 Pro is the same phone in the hand, with a newer chip and one reworked camera, for $100 more.
The one camera that actually changed
The 18 Pro's main camera swaps the 17 Pro's fixed f/1.78 aperture for a variable one with four stops: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. The wide end gathers more light in dim scenes, and the narrow end keeps more of a bright scene in focus. Apple calls it the most advanced camera in an iPhone, and it gives photographers real control over background blur instead of relying on software.
Everything else on the back of the phone is the same part. The 48MP ultrawide stays at f/2.2, and the 48MP tetraprism telephoto keeps its 100mm reach, f/2.8 aperture, 3D sensor-shift stabilization and 12MP 8x crop; the 18 Pro adds no new lens. If your photos mostly come from the main or ultrawide camera in good light, you will not see much difference between these two phones.
Why the 18 Pro's launch makes a refurbished 17 Pro cheaper
Apple pulled the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max from its own store on September 9, 2026, the same day it unveiled the 18 Pro, its usual pattern for retiring the outgoing Pro line. That does two things to the secondhand market at once: it cuts off new supply from Apple, and it turns the 17 Pro into the default trade-in for everyone upgrading to the 18 Pro. If you want the larger screen, see whether a refurbished iPhone 17 Pro Max is worth it.
Don't expect the trade-ins to crash prices overnight. Six weeks after the 18 Pro went on sale, the cheapest unlocked refurbished 17 Pro was $941 at Back Market, still above the $850 record low Amazon Renewed reached on April 14, 2026. So far the launch has not brought new lows. If you can wait for a better price, a price alert on the product page tells you when a unit drops below your number.
How long until a refurbished iPhone 18 Pro shows up
Counted from the 18 Pro's September 9, 2026 announcement, RefurbMe's 67-day median Time-to-Refurb points to a first refurbished iPhone 18 Pro in the US around mid-November 2026. On October 29, RefurbMe had no refurbished iPhone 18 Pro listing in the US. Its bigger sibling got there first: RefurbMe recorded a refurbished iPhone 18 Pro Max at eBay Refurbished on October 23, 2026, about six weeks after the announcement, and it was out of stock by October 25. In the UK, eBay Refurbished listed the first refurbished 18 Pro on September 30, 2026.
Last year's models bracket the estimate. The first refurbished iPhone 17 Pro Max appeared at Back Market on October 19, 2025, and the 17 Pro followed at Gazelle on November 22, 2025. For the full breakdown, including the iPhone Duo and Apple's own slower Certified Refurbished timeline, see when a refurbished iPhone Duo or 18 Pro will exist. Until real 18 Pro listings appear in numbers, buying the 17 Pro refurbished is the practical option.

An unlocked 256GB unit from Back Market at $941 is $158 less than the 17 Pro cost new and $258 less than a new 18 Pro, for the same screen and the same ultrawide and telephoto cameras. More storage costs less than you might think: Back Market had unlocked 512GB units from $1,016, and Gazelle listed an unlocked 1TB unit at $1,219 (last seen October 22), $20 more than a new 256GB 18 Pro. Apple's own Certified Refurbished store sells neither phone; on October 29 its newest refurbished iPhones were iPhone 16 models. Across every iPhone RefurbMe has tracked, the median refurbished discount is 77% (as of October 2026, per the same RefurbMe data), but that figure is skewed by decade-old models and does not describe a phone this recent; the live prices above are the real comparison to use.
Who should actually wait for a refurbished iPhone 18 Pro instead
Buying the 17 Pro refurbished is the right call for most people, but not everyone. Consider waiting for the 18 Pro if:
You shoot a lot of portraits or low-light photos and want the variable aperture's control over background blur, a feature the 17 Pro cannot replicate in hardware.
You plan to keep the phone five or more years and want the newest chip for the longest software support runway.
You want 2TB of storage, which the 18 Pro offers and the 17 Pro does not.
You are trading in an older non-Pro iPhone anyway, since the price gap between a refurbished 17 Pro and a new 18 Pro shrinks once a trade-in credit is applied.
Everyone else gets the same screen, the same ultrawide and telephoto cameras, and a lower price by choosing the refurbished 17 Pro now instead of waiting for 18 Pro stock to build up. If the Pro camera system is not the point at all, our guide to the refurbished iPhone 17 covers the cheaper non-Pro option, and the best refurbished iPhones roundup ranks the whole lineup by value. What is the real difference between the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro?
The iPhone 18 Pro adds the A20 Pro chip, a variable-aperture main camera with four stops from f/1.48 to f/4.0, longer battery life (up to 36 hours of video playback against 33) and faster wired charging, up to 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W adapter. The screen size, ultrawide camera, telephoto camera and body dimensions are unchanged from the iPhone 17 Pro.
Is the iPhone 18 Pro worth the price increase over the iPhone 17 Pro?
Only if the variable-aperture camera or the newest chip matters to you. The 18 Pro costs $100 more new ($1,199 versus the 17 Pro's $1,099 launch price) for one reworked camera and faster charging; the ultrawide, telephoto and display are identical, so most buyers get better value from a refurbished 17 Pro.
How much cheaper is a refurbished iPhone 17 Pro now that the 18 Pro is out?
On October 29, 2026, unlocked refurbished iPhone 17 Pro units started at $941 at Back Market, $158 below the phone's own $1,099 launch price and $258 below a new 18 Pro. That is still above the $850 record low Amazon Renewed reached on April 14, 2026, so the 18 Pro launch has not pushed prices to new lows yet.
When will a refurbished iPhone 18 Pro be available?
In the US, RefurbMe's 67-day median Time-to-Refurb for iPhones, counted from Apple's September 9, 2026 announcement, points to mid-November 2026. On October 29 no refurbished 18 Pro was listed in the US, although a refurbished 18 Pro Max appeared at eBay Refurbished on October 23 and sold out by October 25. In the UK, eBay Refurbished listed a refurbished 18 Pro on September 30, 2026.
Does Apple still sell the iPhone 17 Pro?
No. Apple removed the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max from its own store on September 9, 2026, the day it announced the iPhone 18 Pro, and its Certified Refurbished store had no iPhone 17 model on October 29, 2026. Third-party refurbishers such as Back Market, Mac of All Trades, Amazon Renewed and Gazelle carry it.
What stayed exactly the same between the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro?
The 6.3-inch display size and resolution, the 48MP ultrawide camera at f/2.2, the core telephoto hardware and the body dimensions are all unchanged. The 18 Pro adds a 2TB storage option, is 5 grams heavier and has a smaller Dynamic Island.
