Apple introduced the Pro 2 in 2022 and the AirPods 4 in 2024, so both passed that window long ago and both are regulars in the refurbished AirPods listings. The supply is thin, though. On October 29, only eBay Refurbished and Amazon Renewed had any of these models in stock.
If you want the short answer, here it is. Buy refurbished AirPods Pro 2 if you care about noise cancellation, a secure fit, or hearing health features, which is most people. They are the stronger product, and they cost more: $144 at Amazon Renewed on October 29, 2026, against $82 for the AirPods 4 with ANC at eBay Refurbished.
Buy AirPods 4 with ANC if you dislike the feeling of silicone tips sealing your ears and prefer the lighter, open fit of the standard AirPods. Apple no longer sells this model new, so refurbished is now the only way to buy it, and at $82 it is the cheapest route into noise cancellation in this comparison. You give up some noise cancellation and battery life against the Pro 2, but you keep the casual, all-day comfort that open earbuds are known for.

Apple no longer sells the AirPods Pro 2 new. The AirPods Pro 3 ($249 new) is its successor, with longer battery life and stronger noise cancellation. Apple no longer sells the AirPods 4 new either; the AirPods 5 took its place, so every model in the table above is now a refurbished purchase. One detail to check before you buy a Pro 2: every refurbished unit in the October 29 read was the 2022 model with the Lightning case, which Apple rates IPX4, not the 2023 USB-C model rated IP54. This is the difference you feel before you hear anything. The AirPods 4 keep the classic open design: a hard plastic earbud with no rubber tip that rests just outside your ear canal. There is one size; Apple says it mapped thousands of ear shapes to design it, and nothing pushes into the canal itself.
The AirPods Pro 2 use soft silicone ear tips that seal inside your ear canal, and they ship in four sizes (XS, S, M, and L). That seal is what unlocks real noise isolation, but some people simply do not like the plugged-in sensation, especially for long stretches.
Fit also affects security. The sealed Pro 2 stay put during workouts and runs more reliably than the open AirPods 4, which can loosen when you sweat or move quickly. If you exercise in your earbuds, the Pro 2 are the safer bet.
The AirPods 4 with ANC were the first open-ear AirPods to get Active Noise Cancellation, which closed part of the old gap. They still cannot match the Pro 2, though, and the reason is physical: an open earbud has no seal, so low-frequency rumble from engines, trains, and air conditioning leaks straight through.
Apple states the AirPods Pro 2 cancel up to twice as much noise as the AirPods 4 with ANC. Independent testing backs this up. SoundGuys measured the AirPods 4 with ANC reducing sound by up to about 20 dB, which they describe as roughly a 75% perceived drop in loudness, while the sealed Pro 2 block more across the board and handle the low-frequency rumble the open AirPods 4 let through. What Hi-Fi reached the same conclusion in its head-to-head.
For commutes, flights, and open offices, that difference is large. If you mostly listen at home or want light awareness of your surroundings, the AirPods 4 ANC are enough.
Because both earbuds run the H2 chip, core sound quality and software features are close. Both support Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Adaptive Audio, Transparency mode, Siri, and automatic switching between your Apple devices. Day to day, music and calls sound similar on each.
Two things still favor the Pro 2. First, the sealed fit gives them noticeably stronger and more consistent bass, since less low end escapes around an open earbud. Second, only the Pro 2 include Apple's clinical-grade Hearing Aid feature, along with a Hearing Test and Hearing Protection, in regions where those tools are enabled. The AirPods 4 do not offer them.
If sound isolation and hearing health matter to you, those are meaningful, Pro-only advantages. If you mostly want a clean, familiar AirPods experience, the gap narrows.
The Pro 2 win on battery, though the margin is smaller than the headline numbers suggest. The AirPods Pro 2 last up to 6 hours of listening on a single charge. The AirPods 4 last up to 5 hours, but that drops to about 4 hours with ANC switched on, since powering noise cancellation on an open design is less efficient.
The case narrows the gap but does not close it. The AirPods Pro 2 reach up to 30 hours of total listening with the charging case. The AirPods 4 reach up to 30 hours too with noise control off, but only up to 20 hours once you keep ANC running, which is how most people use an ANC earbud. Apple announced the AirPods Pro 3 on September 9, 2025, and it is still the only Pro model on Apple's AirPods page. The AirPods 5, in Apple Stores since September 18, 2026, sit below it as the open-ear model.
