AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods Pro 2: Which to Buy Refurbished
AirPods Pro 3 is the better refurbished buy today. On October 27, 2026, Amazon Renewed listed it at $160, only $14 above its refurbished AirPods Pro 2 at $146, and the Pro 3 adds stronger noise cancellation, a heart rate sensor and IP57 water resistance. New, it costs $249.

The Pro 2 only wins on price if you catch a cheaper pair. eBay Refurbished had Pro 2 offers at $99, last seen on October 15, twelve days before our read, and a Pro 3 at $159, last seen on October 22. Apple no longer sells the Pro 2 new, and its AirPods page lists the AirPods Pro 3 as the only Pro model. Both run Apple's H2 chip, so the choice comes down to noise cancellation, battery shape, fit and price.
RefurbMe's tracking puts Time-to-Refurb for the AirPods Pro family at a median of 193 days after Apple announces a model (US, as of October 2026, per RefurbMe's AirPods Pro stats). Time-to-Refurb is the median number of days between Apple's announcement and the first refurbished unit RefurbMe records in stock, so a new AirPods Pro usually reaches the refurbished market about six months after Apple announces it. Pro 3 supply is still thin. The October 27 read found three Pro 3 offers at two sellers, and only Amazon Renewed's two had been seen in the three days before it. The Pro 2 has been in the refurbished AirPods listings much longer; RefurbMe first recorded one in stock in December 2022.
Quick verdict: which AirPods Pro should you buy refurbished?
Buy AirPods Pro 3 if you can spend about $160. At Amazon Renewed it cost $14 more than a Pro 2 on October 27, and that buys stronger noise cancellation, workout heart rate tracking, IP57 water resistance and a longer single charge. It is Apple's current Pro model, so it is also the only one you can still buy new.
Buy AirPods Pro 2 if you find a pair near $100. eBay Refurbished's $99 Pro 2 offers, last seen on October 15, would put it $60 under that seller's $159 Pro 3. At that gap you give up some noise cancellation, the heart rate sensor and the higher water rating, and you keep sealed silicone tips and the larger 30-hour case reserve. At $146 against $160, the Pro 2 is hard to justify.
Prices on both models move week to week, so check the live listings before you buy. Refurbished Pro 3 stock is still small enough that one new listing can move its floor.
AirPods Pro 3 vs AirPods Pro 2: spec and price comparison
Both earbuds run Apple's H2 chip, Active Noise Cancellation and Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking. The differences that matter sit in noise cancellation, battery shape, fit, sensors and water resistance.

Apple lists the full AirPods Pro 3 specs on its own tech spec page. The Pro 3 case weighs 43.99 g against 50.8 g for the Pro 2's, even though it is slightly larger (47.2 by 62.2 mm against 45.2 by 60.6 mm). Each Pro 3 earbud weighs 5.55 g, a quarter gram more than the Pro 2's 5.3 g.
Check which Pro 2 you are buying. Apple sold two versions: the 2022 model with a Lightning case, rated IPX4, and the 2023 model with a USB-C case, rated IP54. Every refurbished Pro 2 offer in RefurbMe's October 27 read was the 2022 Lightning model; it found no refurbished USB-C Pro 2 in stock.
What is new on the AirPods Pro 3
Three changes separate the Pro 3 from the Pro 2, and only two of them are hardware exclusive to the new model.
Heart rate sensor. The Pro 3 is the first AirPods that can measure heart rate. Apple built in a custom photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor that shines invisible infrared light pulsed at 256 times per second to measure light absorption in blood flow, and combines it with the accelerometers, gyroscope, GPS and an on-device AI model on iPhone. Apple says you can start up to 50 different workout types. With heart rate sensing on during a workout, Apple rates single-charge listening at up to 6.5 hours.
IP57 water resistance. The Pro 3 is rated IP57, against IP54 for the USB-C Pro 2 and IPX4 for the original Lightning Pro 2. Apple says the Pro 3 is built to handle tough workouts and unpredictable weather, which matters most for the heart rate feature, since that is meant for sweaty sessions.
Live Translation is not Pro 3 exclusive. This one is easy to read as a Pro 3 headline feature, but Apple's own footnote says Live Translation with AirPods works on AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation and AirPods Pro 2 and later with the latest firmware, paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 and later. Your iPhone decides whether you get it, not which AirPods Pro generation you own.
Noise cancellation: how much stronger is the Pro 3?
Apple rates the AirPods Pro 3's noise cancellation as up to 2x more effective than AirPods Pro 2, with 4x more noise removed than the original AirPods Pro. Apple credits ultra-low noise microphones, computational audio and the new foam-infused ear tips, which add passive noise isolation before the active cancellation does its work.
The Pro 2 was already a strong noise-cancelling earbud when it launched, so this is a meaningful step up rather than a leap from a weak baseline. If you already own a Pro 2 and are happy with it, the gap alone is unlikely to justify replacing a working pair.
Battery life: longer per charge, less total with the case
This is the clearest tradeoff between the two generations, and it runs in opposite directions depending on how you measure it. On a single charge with noise cancellation on, the AirPods Pro 3 last up to 8 hours, which Apple calls a 33 percent increase over the AirPods Pro 2's up to 6 hours. With heart rate sensing on during a workout, the Pro 3 figure drops to up to 6.5 hours.
Add the charging case and the result flips. The AirPods Pro 2 reach up to 30 hours of total listening with the case, while the AirPods Pro 3 reach up to 24 hours with noise cancellation on. The Pro 3 earbuds last longer between charges, but the case holds six fewer hours of listening.
For most people, the practical effect is small: both cases cover a full day. If you regularly go two or three days without a charger, the Pro 2's larger case reserve is the more forgiving option. Battery age matters more on a refurbished pair than the spec sheet does; for more on how these batteries hold up, see our guide to how long AirPods last.
Fit and design: five ear tip sizes vs four
The Pro 3 ships with five ear tip sizes, XXS, XS, S, M and L, and Apple says the design draws on over 10,000 ear scans. The tips are foam-infused for better passive isolation. The Pro 2 ships with four silicone sizes, XS through L, the design Apple introduced with the Pro 2 in 2022.
If you struggled to get a secure seal with the Pro 2, the new XXS size is the reason to try the Pro 3. Apple also re-engineered the internals to make each AirPod smaller and aligned the ear tip with the center of the body for stability, so expect the Pro 3 to sit a little differently in your ear even if your Pro 2 tips fit well.
Refurbished pricing: what each generation actually costs right now
The gap between the two generations is narrow today. In RefurbMe's US read on October 27, 2026, Amazon Renewed listed the AirPods Pro 3 at $160 and the AirPods Pro 2 at $146, both seen within a day of the read. That is a $14 gap at the same seller.
eBay Refurbished had cheaper Pro 2 stock, but older: three Pro 2 offers at $99, last seen on October 15, twelve days before the read. Its single Pro 3 offer at $159 was last seen on October 22, five days before. If those listings are still up when you look, the gap at eBay Refurbished is $60. Back Market had no listing for either model in the same read.
Against Apple's $249 new price, a refurbished Pro 3 at $160 is $89 less, about 36% off.
RefurbMe's tracking puts the median discount across every AirPods Pro model it has recorded at 60% versus the original Apple price (US, as of October 2026, per the same AirPods Pro stats). That median spans four releases back to the first AirPods Pro, so it is not a promise that today's Pro 3 will ever be 60% off. Treat it as a sign that AirPods Pro as a line depreciates fast on the refurbished market, not as a price target for either model.

Apple's own refurbished store advertises savings up to 15%, and RefurbMe found no Apple Certified Refurbished AirPods Pro in stock in its October 27 read. The cheaper offers come through Amazon Renewed and eBay Refurbished, compared side by side on RefurbMe. eBay Refurbished is eBay's vetted refurbished program, separate from the open eBay marketplace. eBay says every eBay Refurbished seller must meet rigorous performance standards and monitoring, with a one- or two-year warranty and 30-day free returns.
Ear tip hygiene: confirm the listing includes fresh tips, or budget for a replacement set, since tips are cheap and earbuds go straight into your ear canal.
Battery health: eBay Refurbished grades units as Certified, Excellent, Very Good or Good, and those grades describe cosmetic wear. Prefer sellers who state a battery health percentage.
Heart rate sensor check (Pro 3 only): if buying a refurbished Pro 3, confirm the Fitness app registers heart rate readings during the return window, since it is new hardware with less refurbisher track record than the rest of the earbud.
Model and case: a refurbished Pro 2 is most likely the 2022 Lightning model, rated IPX4. If you want USB-C and IP54, check the case before you pay.
Serial number and warranty: check the serial is not reported lost or stolen, and buy from a refurbisher that states its warranty on the listing.

Final recommendation by use case
Best overall value: AirPods Pro 3. At Amazon Renewed on October 27, it cost $160 against $146 for a Pro 2, and the extra $14 buys stronger ANC, heart rate sensing, IP57 and a longer single charge.
Lowest price: AirPods Pro 2, but only near $100, like eBay Refurbished's $99 offers last seen on October 15. You still get sealed tips, strong ANC and a 30-hour case.
Best noise cancellation and fitness tracking: AirPods Pro 3. The stronger ANC, heart rate sensor and IP57 rating are worth it if you use them.
Upgrading from the original AirPods Pro (1st generation): AirPods Pro 3, since Apple says it removes 4x more noise than the original model, and it adds the fit and sensor changes on top.

Whichever generation you pick, buy from a vetted refurbisher with a stated warranty, check the battery, and confirm current pricing before you commit, since refurbished AirPods Pro prices move from week to week while Pro 3 supply catches up.
Frequently asked questions
Is AirPods Pro 3 worth the upgrade over AirPods Pro 2?
For a refurbished buy today, yes. The Pro 3 adds stronger noise cancellation, a heart rate sensor for workouts and IP57 water resistance, and on October 27, 2026 Amazon Renewed listed it at $160, only $14 above its $146 Pro 2. The Pro 2 makes sense when you find one near $100. If you already own a working Pro 2, the upgrade is harder to justify.
How much better is the noise cancellation on AirPods Pro 3?
Apple says the Pro 3's Active Noise Cancellation is up to 2x more effective than the Pro 2's, crediting ultra-low noise microphones, computational audio and new foam-infused ear tips that improve passive isolation. The Pro 2 was already strong on ANC, so this is a meaningful step up rather than a leap from a weak starting point.
Why is the AirPods Pro 3 case battery life lower than the Pro 2?
The Pro 3 earbuds last longer per charge, up to 8 hours versus 6 for the Pro 2, but total listening time with the case is up to 24 hours on the Pro 3 versus 30 for the Pro 2. In practice the Pro 3 needs fewer trips to the case, while the Pro 2 case holds more reserve between charges.
Does AirPods Pro 3 have a heart rate sensor?
Yes. It is a custom photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor, the first heart rate sensing in AirPods, which measures heart rate during workouts with infrared light and works with the Fitness app on iPhone. The AirPods Pro 2 does not have this sensor.
How much cheaper is a refurbished AirPods Pro 2 vs Pro 3?
Not much right now. On October 27, 2026, Amazon Renewed listed a refurbished AirPods Pro 2 at $146 and an AirPods Pro 3 at $160, a $14 gap. eBay Refurbished had Pro 2 offers at $99, last seen on October 15, and a Pro 3 at $159, last seen on October 22. Prices shift weekly, so check current listings before buying either generation.
Is AirPods Pro 2 still available to buy?
Not new from Apple. Apple's AirPods page lists the AirPods Pro 3, announced on September 9, 2025, as its only Pro model. Refurbished is now the way to buy a Pro 2, and on October 27, 2026 Amazon Renewed listed one at $146, only $14 under its refurbished Pro 3.
