6 Best Places to Buy a Refurbished MacBook in 2026
A refurbished MacBook runs the same macOS on the same aluminum body Apple sold at full price, and how much you save depends on who sells it. Apple's own refurbished store advertises savings of up to 15%. Third-party refurbishers go further on older models: on 13 October 2026, RefurbMe's live US listings had a 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (8GB memory, 256GB storage) from $599 at Amazon Renewed, 50% under its $1,199 launch price. Our complete guide to buying a refurbished MacBook covers how the process works. This page covers where to shop.

Short answer: Back Market has the largest refurbished MacBook selection and a 12-month warranty on every listing, which makes it the best first stop for most buyers. Apple's own refurbished store costs more but ships genuine Apple parts with a full one-year Apple warranty. Amazon Renewed is the convenience pick, though its guarantee runs 90 days rather than a year.
One number worth knowing before you shop: according to RefurbMe's own tracking, a MacBook Air reaches the refurbished market a median of 94 days after Apple announces it (Time-to-Refurb, as of October 2026, source: /stats/macbook-air). MacBook Pro takes 101 days. A machine announced in spring is normally buyable refurbished by late summer, so roughly one quarter of patience is what the discount costs you.
The harder question is not whether to buy refurbished. It is who to buy from. Warranty terms across these sellers run from 30 days to five years with a paid plan, testing rigor varies, and the same model can differ by hundreds of dollars depending on where you look. You can compare refurbished MacBook prices across all of them in one place, but it still helps to know what each seller actually promises.

The savings column compares each seller's cheapest in-stock 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (8GB memory, 256GB storage) in RefurbMe's US listings on 13 October 2026 against Apple's $1,199 launch price for that configuration. Mac of All Trades had no unit of that configuration in stock, so its row shows its cheapest MacBook Air, a 13-inch M1 (8GB memory, 256GB storage, fair condition), against that model's $999 launch price. OWC joined RefurbMe on 17 October 2026, so its row is that day's listing, picked the same way: no 8GB/256GB M2 in stock, so its cheapest M1 MacBook Air, a 13-inch (8GB memory, 256GB storage, fair condition) at $399. Apple's figure is its own stated ceiling across its refurbished store. Refurbished prices move daily, so treat these as a dated snapshot rather than a fixed discount.
How to choose the right refurbished MacBook seller
Before comparing individual retailers, it helps to know what separates a good refurbished deal from a risky one. These are the factors worth weighing:
Warranty length. Twelve months is the industry standard. Anything shorter means you carry more risk, and anything longer is a bonus rather than an expectation.
Testing and certification. Look for sellers that publish their inspection process. Apple Certified Refurbished sets the benchmark, though reputable third-party programs can match it.
Cosmetic grading. Many sellers use letter grades (A, B, C) to describe condition. Knowing what each grade covers prevents surprises on delivery.
Return policy. A generous return window gives you time to test the machine properly before you are committed to it.
Price transparency. The better retailers show the original retail price next to the refurbished price, so the real discount is visible.
Battery health. This one is widely misunderstood. Apple's new-battery promise applies to refurbished iOS devices, not to Macs, so on a MacBook you should check the listed battery cycle count or ask whether the battery was replaced. The same goes for third-party sellers.
Software and activation. Every refurbished MacBook should arrive with a clean install of macOS and no activation lock. A seller who will not confirm that is a seller to skip.
Back Market is a marketplace dedicated entirely to refurbished electronics. It connects hundreds of vetted refurbishers under one roof, which gives it one of the largest refurbished MacBook inventories online and, usually, the widest spread of prices for a single model.
Back Market does not refurbish anything itself. It lists devices from independent refurbishers, each of whom has to pass a screening process before joining the platform.
Every seller answers a detailed questionnaire on their operations and quality procedures, and Back Market verifies those answers through ongoing monitoring. Sellers who miss the quality benchmarks get removed. Devices are graded on a condition scale from "Fair" to "Excellent", so you know what cosmetic wear to expect before you buy.
Back Market's warranty terms give you 12 months of cover from the delivery date. The warranty is provided by the individual seller, and it covers defects in materials and workmanship under normal use, with an exchange, repair, or reimbursement at the end of a valid claim. Longer cover is available as a paid protection plan rather than as standard.
Shipping is free to the 48 contiguous United States for standard delivery. Expedited shipping is available from some sellers for an extra fee.
Products & pricing
Back Market was not the cheapest seller on our reference model this time. On 13 October 2026 its lowest 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (8GB memory, 256GB storage) listed at $627 in fair condition, 48% under the $1,199 launch price, with good condition at $668 and excellent at $709. Amazon Renewed ($599) and eBay Refurbished ($611) were both below it. Because it is a marketplace, prices for the same model vary from seller to seller, so it pays to scroll past the first listing.

Apple runs its own refurbished store, selling manufacturer refurbished Macs alongside the new lineup. Prices sit higher than anywhere else on this list, and the trade-off is that the seller and the manufacturer are the same company.
Refurbished MacBooks from Apple go through the Apple Certified Refurbished program. Apple's own description is specific: you receive "a refurbished device with genuine Apple replacement parts (as needed) that has been thoroughly cleaned and inspected", and "every device will come with all accessories, cables and operating systems", packaged in a brand new white box.
Apple's new-battery and new-outer-shell promise is not a Mac promise. Apple's refurbished program page limits it by category: "Refurbished iOS devices will come with new battery and outer shell." That is iPhone, iPad, and iPod.
A refurbished MacBook is cleaned, inspected, and repaired with genuine Apple parts as needed, and it is backed by Apple, but Apple does not commit to fitting it with a fresh battery or a fresh enclosure. Treat any seller who claims otherwise with suspicion, and check the battery cycle count on arrival either way.
Warranty & shipping
Apple includes its standard one-year limited warranty with every Apple Certified Refurbished product, and these machines are eligible for extended cover through AppleCare, exactly like new ones. That combination, a full Apple warranty plus AppleCare eligibility, is what you are paying the premium for.
All refurbished products ship with free delivery and free returns, the same terms Apple applies to new purchases.

Apple Certified Refurbished MacBooks carry the smallest discounts on this list. Apple states savings of up to 15% below retail. The stock rotates quickly and popular configurations disappear within days, so a price alert is more useful here than patience. Our breakdown of whether Apple's refurbished store is the best deal goes through the math.

OWC (Other World Computing) sells used Macs through its MacSales.com store, next to the storage and upgrade products it is better known for. It has sold to Mac users since 1988 and is based in Woodstock, Illinois. It also sells used iPads and iPhones. RefurbMe lists its offers in the US.
OWC sells machines it has tested itself. Its used Mac pages say every pre-owned Mac "is fully inspected and tested by our Apple Certified technicians", and that every drive is fully wiped before the machine ships. Each unit gets one of four cosmetic grades (Premium, Excellent, Very Good or Good), and OWC describes all four as "Tested, 100% fully functional". The grade tells you about scratches, not about how well the Mac works.
OWC does not publish a minimum battery health for its used MacBooks, so check the cycle count when the machine arrives.
Warranty, shipping & pricing
The standard cover is a 90-day OWC limited parts and labor warranty: three times Mac of All Trades' 30 days, the same length as Amazon's Renewed Guarantee, and a quarter of Back Market's and Apple's year. For a limited time OWC also offers a free 1-year OWC Eclipse warranty on qualifying Macs. You have to select it in the cart, it covers US orders only, and OWC gives no end date for the offer, so don't count on it still running when you buy. Paid Eclipse plans run one to two years and can only be added at purchase.
Read the return terms before you order. You have 30 days from the invoice date to request a return, but OWC charges a 15% restocking fee on an opened Mac. An unopened one costs 5% (up to $25), one returned in a different condition or without its accessories costs 25%, and shipping is not refunded. Test the machine properly in the first few days.
Shipping is free on orders of $99 and up within the 48 contiguous US states.
That puts OWC third: in-house testing like Mac of All Trades with three times its standard warranty, but behind Back Market and Apple on warranty length, and returns cost you money.
RefurbMe started listing OWC on 17 October 2026, with more than 130 refurbished MacBook offers in the US that day. It had no 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (8GB memory, 256GB storage). Its cheapest M1 MacBook Air was a 13-inch with 8GB memory and 256GB storage in fair condition at $399, 60% under that model's $999 launch price, and its cheapest M2 Air was a 13-inch with 16GB memory and 256GB storage in fair condition at $729.
Mac of All Trades sells Apple hardware and nothing else. After more than 25 years in the business it has built a reputation for transparent refurbishment and aggressive pricing, particularly on older models Apple no longer stocks in its own refurbished store.
Mac of All Trades runs an extensive and transparent testing process. Its Apple technicians inspect hardware and cosmetic quality, test all components, and replace anything that fails. Each machine is cleaned and labeled with its exact specifications.
What sets the seller apart is its dual-inspection system: technicians retest and reinspect every MacBook a second time before it ships.
Warranty & shipping
The standard warranty is short. Warranty service for a hardware failure has to be requested within 30 days of the original order, and the cover includes diagnostic fees, repair and labor costs, and return shipping once service is complete. Returns follow the same 30-day window.
For longer cover you can add a Consumer Priority Service (CPS) plan in one, two, three, or five year terms at checkout, which takes effect from day 31 and covers accidental damage as well as hardware failure. Mac of All Trades offers free shipping on all orders within the United States.
That 30-day floor is the reason this seller sits fourth, below OWC's 90 days. On a five-year-old machine, a month of cover is thin, so budget for the CPS plan if you are buying older silicon.
Products & pricing
Mac of All Trades carries a wider range of legacy MacBook models than anyone else here. It is not the cheapest source for recent Apple silicon, though: on 13 October 2026 it had no 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (8GB memory, 256GB storage) in stock. Its cheapest MacBook Air that day was a 13-inch M1 (8GB memory, 256GB storage) in fair condition at $421, 58% under that model's $999 launch price.

For millions of shoppers Amazon is the default place to buy anything, and refurbished MacBooks are no exception. Amazon Renewed has grown into one of the largest sources of certified pre-owned Apple laptops in the United States.
Products sold through Amazon Renewed are tested and certified by Amazon-qualified suppliers to look and work like new. Devices show minimal to no signs of wear, and each unit passes a diagnostic check covering battery health, display quality, and general functionality.
Amazon works with multiple approved third-party sellers, so the depth of that testing varies with the model and the offer. Only "select sellers" are eligible to list Certified Refurbished products, and those sellers have to maintain a high level of quality or lose their place in the program.
Warranty & shipping
This is where Amazon is weaker than its reputation suggests. Most Amazon Renewed items carry a 90-day return period under the Amazon Renewed Guarantee, not a year. Renewed Premium and Renewed Automotive items get 365 days. Some Renewed items instead come with a 30-day return period followed by a free 11-month limited warranty serviced by Asurion, so the cover you actually get is printed on the product detail page and nowhere else. Check it before you buy.
Amazon offers free shipping on refurbished MacBooks, and many listings are eligible for Amazon Prime, which means next-day or two-day delivery at no extra cost. Machines arrive in a generic box with the accessories you would expect from a new purchase, with any exceptions noted on the product page.
Amazon Renewed had the lowest price on our reference model. On 13 October 2026 a 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (8GB memory, 256GB storage) listed from $599 in excellent condition, 50% under its $1,199 launch price, with good-condition units at $699. The spread between grades is wide, so compare conditions before you settle on one.

RefurbMe is a comparison tool, not a refurbisher, so we do not repair MacBooks ourselves. We do vet every merchant before listing them.
We work with all five retailers above, plus eBay Refurbished, eBay's vetted certified refurbished program rather than its open marketplace. Each runs the kind of testing process described in this article. The advantage is that you see MacBooks from all of them side by side instead of one at a time. (Gazelle is one of the other sellers RefurbMe tracks, but it currently carries no in-stock refurbished MacBook listings in the US, so it is not part of this comparison; it remains a solid pick if you are shopping for a refurbished iPhone.)
RefurbMe lets you set up price alerts so you get an email the moment a MacBook you are watching drops in price. You pick the exact specification and the price you want, then stop checking.
You can also set up availability alerts that fire when a specific refurbished MacBook comes back in stock, or when a model is refurbished for the first time. Given the 94-day median wait on a MacBook Air, that second alert is the one that matters for recent releases.

FAQ: buying a refurbished MacBook
Are refurbished MacBooks worth buying?
Yes. A refurbished MacBook delivers the same performance and build quality as a new one for less: Apple's own refurbished store advertises savings of up to 15%, and third-party refurbishers discount older models much harder. Machines from reputable sellers are tested before resale, come with a warranty, and show minimal to no cosmetic wear. The case is especially strong now that M3 and M4 models are widely available refurbished. 👉 Deep dive:Are Refurbished MacBooks Good? Pros and Cons
How long after Apple announces a MacBook does it appear refurbished?
A MacBook Air reaches the refurbished market a median of 94 days after Apple announces it, and a MacBook Pro takes 101 days, according to RefurbMe's own Time-to-Refurb tracking as of October 2026. That is roughly one quarter of waiting for the first refurbished units of a brand-new model. Source: RefurbMe MacBook Air stats.
What is the difference between refurbished and used?
A refurbished MacBook has been professionally inspected, tested, and repaired where needed before resale. A used MacBook is a second-hand machine sold as-is, with no guarantee of condition or function. Refurbished devices normally carry a warranty; used ones usually do not. 👉 Learn more:Refurbished vs. Pre-Owned: What Is the Difference?, or see how to buy a used MacBook safely if a plain used machine is what you are after.
How much can you save on a refurbished MacBook?
It depends on the seller and the model. Apple states savings of up to 15% on its own Certified Refurbished store. Third-party sellers discount older models harder: on 13 October 2026, RefurbMe's US listings had a 13-inch M2 MacBook Air (8GB memory, 256GB storage) from $599 at Amazon Renewed, $611 at eBay Refurbished, and $627 at Back Market, against Apple's $1,199 launch price. Mac of All Trades had none of that configuration in stock, and neither did OWC when RefurbMe started listing it on 17 October. Prices move daily, so compare live listings before you buy.
Is it safe to buy a refurbished MacBook from Amazon?
It is reasonably safe, but read the warranty line on the listing. Most Amazon Renewed items carry a 90-day return period rather than a year, with 365 days on Renewed Premium items, and some listings instead pair a 30-day return window with a free 11-month Asurion limited warranty. The program uses vetted suppliers, though testing standards vary between them.
Does Apple sell refurbished MacBooks directly?
Yes. Apple runs an official Refurbished Store selling certified refurbished Macs with genuine Apple replacement parts as needed, a one-year limited warranty, and AppleCare eligibility. Note that Apple's new-battery and new-outer-shell guarantee covers refurbished iOS devices only, so it does not apply to a MacBook.
Do refurbished MacBooks from Apple come with a new battery?
No, not as a guarantee. Apple's refurbished program page states that "refurbished iOS devices will come with new battery and outer shell", which covers iPhone, iPad, and iPod. Macs get genuine Apple replacement parts as needed plus the one-year limited warranty, but no promised battery or enclosure swap. Check the battery cycle count when the machine arrives.
What should I check when my refurbished MacBook arrives?
Run a quick checklist: confirm the model, storage, and RAM match your order; check the display for dead pixels or uneven backlighting; test the keyboard, trackpad, speakers, and every port; read the battery health figure (System Settings > Battery > Battery Health); and run macOS for a few hours watching for unexpected shutdowns. Most sellers give you at least 14 days to return a machine, so test inside that window.
Can I buy a refurbished MacBook outside the United States?
RefurbMe lists refurbished MacBook deals across seven markets: the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. If you are outside those markets, a US package forwarder can give you a US address and reship the parcel to you. Duty and tax depend on your country, and our import costs guide estimates shipping, duty and tax for sixteen countries.
Is Apple Certified Refurbished better than third-party refurbished?
Apple gives you genuine Apple parts, a full one-year Apple warranty, and AppleCare eligibility, which is the closest thing to buying new. Third-party sellers such as Back Market and Amazon Renewed usually discount harder. Choose on whether you want maximum savings or maximum recourse. 👉 Related:Is Apple Refurbished Worth It? The Facts
Conclusion
Buying a refurbished MacBook does not have to be complicated. Back Market gives you the widest choice and a full 12 months of cover. Apple charges the most and backs it with its own warranty. OWC tests every used Mac with its own technicians and gives 90 days of cover, but charges to take an opened machine back. Mac of All Trades goes deepest on legacy hardware, and Amazon Renewed wins on convenience as long as you read the guarantee line first.
